Following the April 27 Grand Opening, Hillel and the Holocaust Education Center are hosting a walk-through Holocaust exhibit which will be open April 28 - May 4 (weekend excluded) from 10am-5pm. Two additional evening tours will also be available at the registration site.

Please join us to view this prominent exhibition comprised of artwork by 12 survivors of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp who documented their experiences during the Holocaust. This exhibit featuring 60 pieces of art is on loan from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum in Poland. It is our honor to premiere this exhibition in the U.S.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about the Holocaust through the fine arts and to help teachers meet the Illinois state mandate for Holocaust education and contemporary genocide,” said Brian Kahn, co-chair of the Holocaust Education Center of the Champaign-Urbana Jewish Federation (CUJF-HEC). 
 

“The poignant beauty of much Holocaust art deepens yet also complicates the process of Holocaust memory. Even when this art forged in trauma makes viewers uncomfortable, it also teaches," said Dr. Brett Ashley Kaplan, UI Professor of Comparative Literature and Jewish Studies and Director of the Initiative in Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies.

Join a docent-led tour of this rare exhibit to learn more about each artist. Examine the artworks in detail to better understand life in the concentration camp and the experiences of individuals who faced forced labor and constant dehumanization.
